Like a Noise in Dreams (2015, revised 2020)

Brilliant scholars in the mundane world as well as heirs to their magical dynasties, Caroline Mears and Rhys Evans conclude their second year of graduate school at the University of Chicago by getting married. Their honeymoon tour of England conveniently coincides with their uncle Jonathan Mears’ being summoned to an international Anglican conference at Canterbury, but their plans and his are all disrupted by the theft of an antique goblet from Walsingham College, the home of Annandale Military Academy’s summer program in Oxford, and by their efforts to discover the roots of their own magic in the country villages of Durley and Swanwick. Author Crystal Hubbard writes: “This is brilliant magical realism with absolutely no contrivances or elementary tropes.”
